Press Release Summary = Following recent criticism of high-profile authors for ignoring the Bushmen cause in southern Africa, Salt & Honey by Candi Miller is making a mark as one the first novels to bring their plight into international focus.
Press Release Body = Set during Apartheid and featuring a young girl being displaced from her Kalahari desert-tribe, the acclaimed Salt & Honey is being promoted by Waterstone's and has already received widespread film, translation and foreign rights interest.
As well as being a beautifully-written and stunningly authentic story, it has gained attention as being the first Western mainstream novel to feature the famous 'click' language of the San tribes. The book comes complete with a short guide at the back so readers can try out the pronunciations.
The author researched the novel for ten years, including an expedition to live with one of the Kalahari tribes. Miller revealed that it was shocking news which drove her to take on the Bushmen's cause: "While doing research I came across a rumour, widely held to be based on fact, that in the previous century it had been possible to buy a license to shoot Bushmen in what was then South West Africa, much as one could buy a licence to shoot buck. I knew then here was a tale that had to be told."
Over the launch period several money-raising events were held in conjunction with Survival International, the organisation which works to aid and raise the profile of the Bushmen cause. Miriam Ross, Press Officer at Survival International, commented: "Salt & Honey is a sensitive and beautiful portrayal of a young Bushman woman and the horrific oppression her people faced in the 1950s and 60s. That oppression continues today, most famously in the case of the Gana and Gwi of Botswana, making the book very timely indeed."
Tom Chalmers, Managing Director of Legend Press, concluded: "With so much written about the terrible struggles in southern Africa over the last century and with so many causes being flagged, the Bushmen have sadly became the forgotten people. Salt & Honey is one of the first novels to put this right. Not only is it a stunning debut, it will hopefully set a precedent where others have so far chosen not to tread."
